A new shelter is being built to protect Chernobyl in Ukraine. The construction costs over 1bn ($1.46bn/1.38bn euros) and is intended to stop radioactive material leaking, and to allow the old reactor to be dismantled safely.
A catastrophic explosion in April 1986 caused 31 deaths, and the radioactive material released spread across Europe.
The BBC’s Science Editor David Shukman went to see the shield being built.

  1. According to wikipedia.
Radioactive dust in the shelter is monitored by hundreds of sensors.[13] Workers in the 'local zone' carry two dosimeters, one showing real-time exposure and the second recording information for the worker's dose log.[23]

Workers have a daily and annual radiation exposure limit. Their dosimeter beeps if the limit is reached and the worker's site access is canceled.[23] The annual limit (20 millisieverts) may be reached by spending 12 minutes above the roof of the 1986 sarcophagus, or a few hours around its chimney.[12]

  2. "Now to come this close, I've had to put on safety equipment."
Because now if it falls on you the helmet will protect you xD

  3. USSR: We need cheap energy.
USSR: We need you to go and sacrifice your life to clean up that radioactive waste tovarich.
