The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has taken to social media to voice his fury at the fact that his nation is not currently being considered for membership in NATO. He is not being coy about his displeasure with the situation.
Although Ukraine will be present at the NATO meeting that will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania on Tuesday and Wednesday, Zelenskyy expressed his disappointment that the alliance continues to prevent his nation from becoming a member.
“It is unheard of and absurd when [a] time frame is not set neither for the invitation nor for Ukraine’s membership,” said the president of the European Council. While at the same time, ambiguous terminology regarding ‘conditions’ is inserted even for inviting Ukraine,” Zelenskyy remarked in a lengthy tweet first thing on Tuesday morning. In addition to this, Putin stated that the international coalition was disrespecting his country, which was “motivating” Russia in the process.
In an interview with CNN that aired on Sunday, Vice President Joe Biden made it abundantly clear that he does not support Ukraine joining the alliance during this time of active conflict with Russia. In addition, Biden brought up a few concerns with Ukraine’s eligibility, such as the country’s lack of democratic reform. He did not elaborate on his statement that there should be “a rational path for Ukraine to be able to qualify to be able to get into NATO,” but he did say that there should be “a rational path.”
Zelenskyy stated that the worldwide alliance was “about respect” and that Ukraine, as it seeks membership, “deserves respect.” He also asserted that by not taking moves to incorporate Ukraine, “a window of opportunity is being left to bargain Ukraine’s membership in NATO in negotiations with Russia.” This was in reference to his previous statement. According to his argument, this supplies Russia with the “motivation to continue its terror.”
However, prominent politicians from throughout the world, such as Vice President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have suggested that Russia’s further aggression would be prompted by Ukraine’s accession to NATO rather than being a deterrent.
During his appearance with CNN, Vice President Biden emphasised that if Ukraine were to join NATO at this time, it would commit NATO to war against Russia.
We are resolute in our intention to devote every square inch of NATO territory. It’s a promise that all of us have made to see it through no matter what,” he remarked. “If the war is still going on, then all of us are fighting. If it were the true, then we would be at war with Russia.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has just welcomed Finland as its 31st member and struck an agreement on Monday that will clear the way for Sweden to become its 32nd member.
